Naturalists will enjoy watching humpback whales off the north-east coast – January to March being the time the whales return to Dominican waters to breed. In February, don’t miss La Vega Carnival – loud and colourful! June brings Cabarete Race Week (windsurfing, sailing, dancing and music). The Merengue Festival begins at the end of July and continues into August – a festival of dance. The Amber Museum, Altos de Chavon Cultural Centre ‘artists’ village’, Santo Domingo dates back to colonial times and here you will find lively nightlife.
